Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans: Tulips and Windmills in One Full Day

They Point in Opposite Directions

Keukenhof sits south-west of Amsterdam near Lisse. Zaanse Schans sits north, up the Zaan. Doing both under your own steam means a train to Leiden, a bus to the park, the same journey back through the city, then a second train north and a walk over the Julianabrug. It can be done. It eats the day and about €40 in fares.

The coach turns that into one loop with a seat and a guide. For the two weeks a year when both are worth seeing on the same day, that is what the $109 buys.

The dissent is worth reading too. Na G., May 2026, gave three stars and described the day as commentary from the coach rather than guided visits at each site. On a 9-hour trip with 88 seats, how much guiding you get depends on which guide you draw.

The Season, and What It Means for Your Date

Keukenhof opens 18 March and closes 9 May 2027, daily from 08:00 to 19:00, with the entrance shutting at 18:15. Outside that window this tour does not exist.

Peak bloom usually falls in mid-April, and it moves by two or three weeks depending on the winter. Nobody can promise you peak bloom on a given date, and the operator does not try. Several May reviewers found the commercial fields outside already harvested while the gardens inside the park stayed spectacular, which is the usual late-season picture.

The Scale, and What 3.5 Hours Covers

Thirty-two hectares, seven million bulbs, fifteen kilometres of paths. The park splits into themed gardens and indoor pavilions where orchids and lilies flower regardless of the weather outside. There is a playground, several cafés and picnic space.

Three and a half hours covers the main routes and the pavilions at a comfortable pace. It does not cover every path. Kate H. wanted an extra hour; other reviewers found it slightly long. Take the map at the gate and pick two pavilions rather than trying to walk the lot.

One practical detail that catches people out: Keukenhof is cash-free. Bring a card for coffee.

Two and a Half Hours at the Mills

After Keukenhof the coach runs north for the windmill village: the clog carving demonstration, the cheese farm and free time along the river. A windmill entry, worth about €7.50, is included in the ticket.

Gregory N. in May 2026 found the clog and cheese demonstrations rushed inside a nine-hour day, and he has a point. The demonstrations are short by design. The free exploration time is the better part of this half, so use it on the dike path and one mill interior rather than the souvenir shops.
