What the Classic Covers

The base ticket buys the coach, the guide and three stops: Zaanse Schans for the mills, Volendam for the harbour and the cheese factory, Marken for the wooden houses. The cheese demonstration and tasting are included, and so is the clog-making demonstration, which here runs off an antique steam engine rather than a modern lathe.

What the Classic does not include is any windmill interior. You walk among the mills, photograph them from the dike path, and pay €7.50 at the door if you want to go inside one.

What the All-in Adds

Three things, and one of them is the reason to consider the upgrade.

The boat across the Gouwzee between Volendam and Marken runs half an hour and replaces a stretch of road with open water, which is the only part of this itinerary that resembles what the old Zuiderzee actually was. The windmill demonstration puts you inside a working mill, which the Classic leaves out. The stroopwafel demonstration is pleasant and takes ten minutes.

If you are choosing on value, price the upgrade against €7.50, which is what a mill costs at the door. If the difference is more than that plus a few euros for the boat, take the Classic and buy the mill entry yourself.

Zaanse Schans

Forty-five minutes north by coach, or a little more in traffic. The village holds ten historic mills on a bend of the Zaan, six of which open to visitors, with green timber houses and red-tiled sheds between them.

Walking in is free, which surprises most people on the bus. The paid part is the interiors: De Kat, the paint mill, opens 9:00 to 16:30 and is the one worth the €7.50 if you only go into one.

Volendam and the Cheese Factory

A working harbour with a row of gabled houses along the quay, the herring and kibbeling stalls, and the shops renting traditional dress for photographs. The cheese factory visit and tasting sit here, running from young Gouda to aged wheels that crunch.

The optional extras clustered around this stop are worth knowing about in advance: the bakery tasting, lunch and the boat all carry their own charge on the Classic ticket.

Marken

The old island village, reached by causeway or by boat on the All-in. Black and green wooden houses on raised mounds, a small harbour, and the clog demonstration with its steam engine. Quieter than Volendam by a distance, and the better of the two for a walk.

What to Bring, and What Is Not Allowed

Three outdoor stops on open water means wind, and the operator's own advice is weather-appropriate clothing rather than anything more specific. Not suitable for wheelchair users, and the operator also flags a low level of fitness as a reason not to book.

Why 20,000 Reviews Sit at 4.5

This is the highest-volume windmill trip out of Amsterdam, and volume drags a rating toward the middle. The recurring praise is value: Jess, writing on 29 July 2026, called it "great value for money, got to see lots of different places and learnt a lot from the guides and the audio on the bus."

The recurring complaint is the size of it. Coaches this full move slowly through the clog demonstration and the cheese room, and the free time at each stop gets divided among a lot of people. If that matters more to you than $16, the max-16 small group is the alternative.

Book It If

For a first visit with limited time, this is the cheapest way to see three places in one morning.

• You are travelling with children, since the under-4 and 4-13 fares are clear
• Price is the deciding factor and you accept a full coach

Not Suitable For

The operator lists two exclusions and the reviews add a third.

• Anyone who wants a small group: this coach is the largest on the site
• Anyone whose priority is going inside a mill, unless you take the All-in or pay €7.50 yourself
